Balloon Information & Care (Easy Guide)

Balloons can be filled in two main ways — with air or with helium. Each type behaves differently, so here’s what you need to know to get the best results from your balloons.

Air-Filled Balloons

• Air-filled balloons do NOT float. • These balloons will need to be placed on a balloon stick, taped to a surface, attached to a structure, or displayed as part of a balloon arrangement. • They usually last much longer than helium balloons — often several days or even weeks indoors.

Helium-Filled Balloons

• Helium balloons DO float on their own. • Because they rise, they will come with a ribbon. • To prevent them from flying away, they must be tied to a balloon weight or something heavy.

Float time depends on balloon size, the quality of the balloon, and environmental conditions like heat or humidity.

Typical Float Times

Latex balloons (helium-filled): about 8 hoursFoil balloons (helium-filled): about 24 hours or more

Important: Heat affects balloons! Do NOT leave helium balloons in a hot car or direct sunlight. High temperatures can cause balloons to expand, pop, shrink, or lose their float time much faster.
